Trust the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to amp up an event.

And the 8th Luminaries Night, held last March 6 at the Rizal Ballroom of Shangri-la Hotel Makati, was no exception. The sit-down dinner was just a prelude to the spectacle on stage: With celebrity hosts David Celdran and Iza Calzado, the entire show turned the spotlight on Meralco’s distinguished partners and their significant contributions to nation-building.

“We conceptualized and launched the Meralco Luminaries eight years ago,” explained Meralco President and CEO Oscar S. Reyes in a speech that night, “driven by our vision and our commitment to help create a brighter and ever more progressive future for the country."

He continued: “But we realized that innovations and technologies alone are not enough to make our vision a reality. The sustainably bright future we envision can only happen with partners who also share in our aspirations. And thus was born the Meralco Luminaries.”

And the Lumies go to...
The first corporate partner to be recognized was Landev, the asset and property management arm of the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC). Mario Paguio, Landev’s chief operating officer, ascended the stage to receive the award.

A look at Landev's initiatives

By leveraging on the managed services of Mserv, Meralco's wholly-owned energy services company, Landev is leading the initiatives for YGC's building properties to become more energy efficient. Their ultimate goal? For these buildings to become LEED certified. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the world’s foremost green building rating system.

Taking the other corporate award for the night was Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), represented by Frederick Go, RLC president and chief executive officer. Working with Meralco, the property developer has ensured highly reliable e2e connectivity in Bridgetowne, its up-and-coming development at the corner of C-5 and Ortigas Avenue. Spanning both sides of the Pasig river, Bridgetowne is poised to become a master-planned, world-class community when it opens in 2022.

Robinsons Land Corporation's innovations

Other awardees that night included the cities of Biñan and Makati. These local government unit Luminaries were honored for the innovative ways they used energization to enrich their communities. Also recognized for their achievements were Biz partners RNN Joliant Corporation, a food services provider for a major convenience store chain, and Chocovron, a manufacturer of delicious polvoron pastries.

Dazzling talent
Such achievements deserve to be accompanied by world-class entertainment. Headlining the evening’s program was Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, and along with World Champion of Performing Arts Jed Madela, and first Pinoy Pop Superstar Grand winner Jonalyn Viray, they lit up the stage with their performances.

Also dazzling the audience were performances from today’s pop royalty—Janella Salvador, daughter of actress Jenine Desiderio, and Jayda Avanzado, daughter of Dingdong Avanzado and Jessa Zaragoza. The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra provided the music for the whole night, and was led by none other than National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab (who also won his own special Luminaries trophy!). Off the stage, musical director Rowell Santiago kept the entire program running smoothly.

The festivities concluded with Meralco Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan calling on everyone to stand up, glass in hand, and toast the Luminaries.
